Magic Fingers. For those above a certain age and cheap enough to stay in a seedy motel, you might remember a box that used to sit on the nightstand by the bed, with a slot for a quarter and a winding stem that you turned which would give you a 15 minute bed massage. The guy who invented it, John Houghtaling, originally sold both the bed and the motor as a set, but later realized he could just create a motor that would attach to the bedsprings, saving a whole lot of trouble and making it much more widely available. These days we're accustomed to a lot more automation, but back then it was pretty wild to put a quarter in the slot and have the bed start vibrating. With the bed vibrating and all that liquor in your system, usually 15 minutes was more than enough time to allow you to fall into a numb stupor.
