Another from my Topographica collection, consisting of works based on differing elevations. The title refers to a short story by the American science fiction writer Harlan Ellison, which won the Hugo award for outstanding science fiction in 1968. In the story, an advanced warmaking computer becomes sentient, goes rogue, and kills everyone on Earth except for a handful of people, whom it subjects to a barrage of merciless tortures. I think this piece perfectly captures the horror and hopelessness of that tale in all of its grim splendor.
